Microsoft Removes Start Button in Windows 8 “Consumer Preview”, Adds Hot Corner [Poll]

The move to the new Metro UI as the default for Windows 8 has stirred up a good bit of controversy since its introduction this past Fall. Now Microsoft is taking another step in this new direction with the removal of the Start Button in the upcoming “Consumer Preview”.

As you can see in the final “pre Consumer Preview” build screenshots above and below, the Super Bar remains intact, but definitely lacks the classic Start Button that we have all been accustomed to seeing. Instead you will have a “Hot Corner” available that will display a thumbnail-like user interface (Metro and desktop modes) for accessing the Windows desktop and Start Screen.

Hide Your Printer In a Dresser Drawer

Office peripherals aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing objects, so we hardly blame you if you want to stash them away. This clever hack hides a printer in a dresser drawer with a DIY fold-down front.

Pamela’s home office is part of her master bedroom–a great motivation to make your office look at little like a traditional workspace as possible. In order to hide the necessary but utilitarian printer she cleverly hacked a drawer on her dresser to serve as a peripheral hide away. Rather than pull the drawer out in a traditional fashion to use the printer, the front has been modified so that it folds down like the front of a mail box. When you’re done printing you simply raise the front of the drawer again and it looks like an unmodified dresser.

Even if you’re not working out of your dresser, it’s a clever hack for any office with drawers large enough to hide necessary but unsightly office clutter and peripherals. Turn an Old Laptop into a Windows 8 Tablet

If you’d like to take Windows 8 for a preview spin on an actual tablet, this hack converts an old (but suitably spec’d) laptop into a touch screen tablet for Windows 8 Preview.

Instructables user HackItBuildIt shares his guide to converting an old laptop into a Windows 8 tablet. You’ll need an old laptop with specs high enough to run Windows 8 and that you’re willing to do a little franken-hacking on–you’ll need to remove the screen, rotate it, add a touch screen panel, and reframe it over the laptop body. When you’re done it won’t exactly be a slender iPad, but it will run Windows 8 with a native touch screen.

With two-factor authentication, you need more than just your password to log in. Even if your LastPass password is captured by a keylogger, no one can log into your account without the second authentication key. Only one two-factor authentication method can be enabled at a time, so choose the one you prefer.

You can access each by typing chrome://, followed by the name of the page — you can also use the more traditional about: prefix, which redirects you to the chrome:// URL.

IKEA Nightlight Hacked for Android-based Control

Normally this cute IKEA nightlight simply displays some LED-powered colors. With hacked guts, however, it becomes a remote controlled indicator.

The initial hack simply adds in a Bluetooth-based serial controller, allowing you to change the light from an Android phone (or any Bluetooth enabled device capable of communicating with the module, really). It’s a short step from there to toggling the color based on specific input (as oppose to user desire) such as changing color based on the weather or to indicate new messages in an inbox.

Computers may have evolved mightily in the last century but we haven’t; read on to see how your fellow readers increase their computing comfort.

Machines have gotten smaller, screens brighter and thinner, and peripherals more varied. With all this change, however, the human body has stayed the same. In order to use technology effectively and safely, we have to make adaptations to our environment to save our wrists and backs. Earlier this week we asked to share the workstation tweaks and tricks they had adopted to increase their comfort. Clearly we hit on a topic that many readers had invested some serious thought into.

Steve-O-Rama shared a lengthy response that covers everything from keyboards to chairs:

After having gone through several keyboards, mice, desks, monitors, chairs, etc., here’s what I’m running with at my main workspace:

1. IBM Model M keyboard from 1993. This is #1 for many reasons, but most of all, my hands don’t hurt after an entire day of using the keyboard anymore. :)
